The Data Protection Act 2003 provides for a  system of registration, whereby every data controller will be required to register, unless exempted from this requirement under regulations made by the Minister for Justice and Equality.

Data controllers who hold personal data for two or more unrelated purposes will have to make separate applications for registration for each such purpose.
